Pei Aimin is a farmer living in a small desert village in Minqin County, Gansu Province. For over 30 years, she has held on to two simple passions (酷爱): farming the land and reading and writing. Online, she is known as “Field Mouse Auntie”. This special nickname comes from her deep love for fairy tales.
Pei’s life is much like that of most rural women of her generation. She finished junior high and married young. The villagers around her cared mostly about crop harvests and farm animals; few understood her passion for books. Yet Pei never gave up. Even during the busiest farming seasons, she carried a notebook and a pen to write down her thoughts at any time.
For Pei, books are the best shelter for her soul. In 2011, she started a Weibo account to share peaceful rural moments—the smell of fresh soil, wind sweeping through corn fields and old village memories. Her warm and poetic words attracted thousands of readers across the country. In 2022, she published her book Field Mouse Auntie’s Diary.
Now in her fifties, Pei still keeps her daily routine: farming by day and reading and writing by night. As old villagers pass away and rural traditions fade, she feels it is her duty to record these disappearing stories. Through her words, she hopes to show the world that ordinary country life has its own beauty and meaning.
